Last weekend Diabolic Heaven played the first of 2 weekends of the Belgian Ultimate Outdoor Competition (aka BUOC). Our goal was to obtain a higher ranking than last year (7th place), so we were aiming for a place in the upperpool of first division. When we received our schedule we knew this would be a tough one, especially with the absence of some key players.
Saturday morning 9 o’clock, Diabolic against the vice-champ of last years BUOC, Jetset. Immediately a big test to compare our level with the top teams. Diabolic Heaven was able to keep up, but eventually Jetset proved to be just a bit more efficient and they took the victory home with 11 to 7.
Afterwards DH played the Slijpschijven, a very similar team compared to ours, and one to watch out for. This was one of those games that would count at the end of the day. After a really tough game, Diabolic proved to be a bit more mature than last years BUOC and so we won the game with 13 to 8.
Next up: our neighbors from Helchteren. They weren’t really first division material yet, but they managed to give us good game. 13-5.
The last, but certainly not the least, opponent of the day was Gentle, possibly the strongest contender in this years BUOC. Sometimes Diabolic is still a bit too respectful when playing one of the top teams in Belgium. This was one of those games. The game could have been closer, but Gentle took the victory home with a very solid play. 6-12.
On sunday morning Diabolic still had to win their game against Gentle 3 to obtain a place in the top pool, because Slijpschijven was able to win their game against Jetset. Normally Diabolic shouldn’t have a lot of trouble winning against Gentle 3, but without Oli and Mike, you never know. After a few minutes we realized there was no need to worry anymore. Diabolic took control over the game, and never gave it away. 13-4. Quickly of to field 3 to see if Slijpschijven wasn’t pulling another stunt against Gentle. But, sadly for them and luckily for us, Gentle seemed to be a bit too strong. 9-5. Goal achieved: Top 6!
Next: Round 2! In the first weekend of BUOC the first 2 games of round 2 are played. Diabolic had to play the first 2 teams of the other pool in division 1: Freezzzbeezzz and Mooncatchers.
First the Freezzzbeezzz. As usual, this would be a really close battle. Diabolic started in the lead but Freezzzbeezzz took over at 6-6. Leading with 1 point difference until the end of the game. But, in the cap Diabolic was able to tie the score, and so a golden point would decide over this really close and hard fought game. A short pass between 2 DH defenders was touched by Ben, and then dropped by the Freezzzbeezzz. Turnover! Diabolic took control over the disc, played patiently around, looking for the open option. And there it was! Diabolic scores and wins the first game of the upperpool. Semi-finals anyone? Maybe…
Last game of the weekend. Every single muscle is hurting. Diabolic had used a lot of the tiny bit of energy that was left in the game against the Freezzzbeezzz. So, we didn’t have any expectations for the last game, against the reigning champion Moon. But, Moon had a really tough game as well, so who knows? They might be equally tired? Diabolic, still on fire after their game against the Freezzzbeezzz, took a good start, but due to some unlucky drops, Mooncatchers was able to take a comfortable lead of 4 points. 8-4. Otherwise DH felt the game wasn’t over. The second half would be ours! With some massive D’s, a lot of hard work and our “secret” weapon Joren, we got back in the game. Tying the game at 12-12. Right before the end signal Moon was able to score one more point, 12-13. Cap + 2, so whoever scores 15 first, wins the game. From this point on each team managed to score upwind one more time: 13-14, Now Moon only had to score 1 more point, and Diabolic had to score upwind to tie the game and still needed to do a D to finish it off. After a beautiful combination trough Moons zone defense Diabolic managed to tie the game. Another golden point would decide. Now Moon had to score upwind. Advancing meter by meter towards the endzone, Moon had the possibility to finish it of, but a beautiful D by Ben in the endzone, a nice huck by Sigi, and a superb run and beautiful skying catch by who else but Joren made Diabolic Heaven beat the reigning champs. Nobody expected this: Diabolic Heaven, playing with only 11, without 5 key-players, beating the reigning champ? I must admit I didn’t think it would be possible, but I’m very happy I was wrong!
After the first weekend of BUOC Diabolic Heaven is in first place, next to Gentle. Another proof that we’re getting closer to the real top teams in Belgium. Let’s go for another stunt next weekend!
