Tom’s Tourney 2013 started on Thursday the 9th of May. Personally I had been looking forward to this for weeks, having a chance to meet up with some friends from Paganello. After the appropriate amount of hugs and excitement we all left for Bruges on Thursday morning, ready to fight for the title in second division. Despite the wind giving us a hard time, day one went smoothly and DH ended up first in our pool. After having dinner at a local restaurant, we went to explore the fair. We enjoyed some fair food, raced some camels and called it a successful night when one of our teammates won an airhorn. Friday proved to be a more challenging day. We played some tighter games e.g. against Blue Arse Flies and fellow Belgian team Slijpschijven. A very experienced team, BAF did not seem to be bothered by the wind that much. But the scores turned out in our favor and we were still on schedule. In between games we enjoyed watching some high level European Ultimate in the sunshine. After a long day we celebrated our journey to the semis with champagne provided by the organization and Brugse Zot. A few of us made a quick appearance at the party, but our craving for sleep had the upper hand. After winning semifinals, we were going into the finals undefeated. In 2011 we played the finals against the same team, namely Sun from France. So we knew this would be a coequal opponent. Sun dominated the first few points with a very strong offence our defense didn’t have an answer to. The score quickly ran up to 5-0 at which point we decided that we weren’t playing our game and it was time to step it up. We tightened our D and got our heads in the game, after which we evened the score a little to 6-4 (?). We fought for every point and despite some incredible plays like a beautiful layout D by Joren Severy and layout point by Matt McD, we couldn’t quite catch up with Sun. The score ended up being 14-11. Both teams played hard, the spirit was high, in sum a very good final. And a great edition of Tom’s Tourney.
